This is a blog about the joy of art, creativity and playing. I am a retired elementary school teacher and have been teaching art to children for over 40 years. In this blog, I share my love of teaching art to children by providing ideas on how to get started with drawing, painting, printmaking and mixed media arts. The best part is that you can learn these skills too! I have been interested in creativity since I was a child myself. My mother was a commercial artist and her career in the art world inspired me in many ways. She and my dad were always encouraging and supportive of my artistic efforts. My mother used to give me a penny for each word I could write in perfect penmanship, but I really wanted to earn fifty cents so that I could go play the slot machine at Woolworth’s for an hour! To earn that extra money, I would work hard on improving my handwriting until it was just right. I also remember when I was in kindergarten, we had an assignment to draw a picture of something we enjoyed doing. The only problem was that I couldn’t think of anything I enjoyed doing. That was a very sad day for a six-year-old boy. The drawing for this assignment was going to be graded and it would be the first grade I ever received. So, my mother suggested that I draw something that I did enjoy doing and she probably thought that she could help me come up with an idea by asking plenty of questions. After all, we were at the kitchen table together, so there were plenty of opportunities for her to question me! She continued to ask me lots of questions about what I liked to do and what kind of things we did as a family. Finally, she asked me if we had a hobby and of course we did — we played baseball! I was so happy to remember that it was our family hobby. Even though I am an artist now, I still love to play baseball. I am currently retired from teaching at the elementary level where I taught art for 25 years. My elementary students continued to inspire me with their creativity and new ideas every year. One of my favorite projects that I did with my students involved magazines. We cut out pictures of people from magazines and then glued them onto cardboard tubes in different poses that made them into human-shaped sculptures or sculptures of things. For example, sailboats, snakes, shepherds, chairs and all kinds of other things. I loved seeing how creative they were with this project! When my children were little they loved looking at books. We had lots of books in our house and I read to them every night. This is how I got the idea to have them draw pictures from the books we read. Later on as they grew older, we used those pictures as a starting point for making collages as a family. cfa1e77820
