The world of Indian cinema would not be where it is today without Pyaar Ki Yeh Ek Kahani, the story of two people who are destined to love each other for eternity. This is a story about two souls who are loathed to be in the same space because it could destroy their relationship forever because one person has to die when they meet. The story takes you through all 330 episodes of this Pakistani TV series and why it became so popular and won so many awards and accolades. For those who have never heard of this show, it is a romantic drama which was based on the widely-read novel of the same name by Iranian author Fatima Ahmad. The novel explores many powerful themes, such as love, betrayal and sacrifice. The story begins with the story of a man (Mehboob Sheikh) who is washed ashore on an island. The show cuts over to his past when he was a lover boy living in Persia and became Arjumand's (Mehrunisa Vahda) lover. Her father was a wealthy businessman and Mehboob Sheikh wanted to marry her but her father refused and told Mehboob that if he really loved his daughter then he should send her away to Pakistan for three years where she will forget about him. He sends her away and in this time, they correspond through letters until one day she becomes pregnant with Mehboob's child. When Arjumand reveals this to him, he leaves his other lover Pari (Shireen Khan) and wants to marry Arjumand. When he confronts her father, he tells him about the pregnancy and their child. He says that he will pay for everything including his unborn child's education but her father still refuses. In those few years, Mehboob wrote a book about how a man's life changes when his life has been taken from him by death. She then sends the book manuscript to her father as a gift where she also enclosed all of his letters to her in order to ensure that when she has died, it will be the only thing that will remind him of her. After her father dies, her uncle returns to Persia where he discovers the letters and realises that Mehboob was not sent to Pakistan as she had said but was actually sent to India. Mehboob's uncle is a good man who does good deeds for the people of the country. He adopts a poor orphan girl named Shireen in order to look after his niece. Shireen grows up in a small village in a family which has no means of livelihood and nobody is doing anything about it except her mother who has no idea how she is going to make money in order to feed Shireen and her brother occasionally. She tries her best to make ends meet but sometimes there is no food to eat. However, one day she comes home and discovers that her mother has died. Shireen becomes an orphan. She is taken in by the family of the local landlord named Malik Anwar (Shagufta Ejaz) who is a cruel man who terrorizes the people of his village and collects taxes for himself.
